Greg Steltenpohl, the same founder of Odwalla, brings a marvelous new brand to the health conscious table in 2010: Califia Farms. “Our name comes from the Spanish legend of warrior queen Califia who ruled over a kingdom on the mythical island of California. Spanish conquistadors believed they had discovered Califia’s bountiful island when they first explored California.” The GMO-free, Kosher, Gluten-Free and Vegan Almond Milk is especially worth talking about. The good news is , as of July 2013, it is nationally available through Whole Foods retailers. According to the BevNET, Greg Steltenpohl states “All of our products are Non-GMO Project Verified, and Whole Foods Market was the first national retailer to make a public commitment to full GMO-transparency by 2018.”
A bit about almond milk: It is dairy free and comparably lower in calories and protein than other milks. An 8oz glass provides 50% of your daily value in Vitamin B12 ( a nutrient necessary for making blood and maintaining function in the brain and nervous system), 45% of Calcium (necessary for heart, nerve and muscle conduction and well as development of bones) and Vitamin E (which protects cells from free radicals), as well as 25% of Vitamin D and Riboflavin.
Aside from the health benefits and amazing taste of this Almondmilk, its sustainable company is using heat recovery systems to capture 80%-90% of the available heat produced from equipment as well as sunlights to conserve energy. The facility focuses on waste reduction by repurposing 90% of their production byproduct, as well as using recycled equipment and 100% recyclable packaging. They also support the Xerxes Society, an organization dedicated to protecting bee biodiversity.
This is a drink to feel good about, and my favorite is the creamy, Toasted Coconut Almondmilk! With autumn on our heels, I thought it would be perfect to share how I use this product daily, in my Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte, in case you wanted to indulge and save yourself the commercial chemicals:
Pumpkin Spice Syrup:
1 can (15 oz) organic canned pumpkin
1 cup raw honey (you can substitute half with xylitol)
½ c water
2 t vanilla extract
2 t cinnamon
1 t nutmeg
½ t cloves
½ t ginger
In a saucepan, bring the liquid ingredients to a boil, add in the spices and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally as the syrup thickens. Let cool and jar, or immediately brew 2 shots of organic espresso and add 1 tablespoon of the syrup to in a mug. Steam ½ cup of Califia Farms Toasted Coconut Almondmilk and stir in. Enjoy your delicious cup of fall and this great new product!
Until next time, Lauren Wright
