Product Review: Wakame at Mountain Rose
Wakame is a seaweed native to coastal areas of Japan, Korea and China but has spread to other cold-climate coastal regions like New Zealand and San Francisco Bay. It is used in soups, stews, salads and other Asian dishes.
There are many health benefits of eating Wakame because of its rich mineral content and a compound called fucoxanthin. Researchers have studied the health benefits of fucoxanthin in everything from diabetes to cancer. Because it is so rich in iodine, you need to monitor how much Wakame you are eating with the help of your Naturopathic Doctor.
We recommend purchasing your Wakame from Mountain Rose Herbs. This outstanding company has high standards for their products that focus on organic agriculture, fair trade practices, sustainability, and wild crafting. In addition to their outstanding agricultural ethics, Mountain Rose has environmentally friendly business practices such as using 100% post consumer recycled materials. The Wakame available from Mountain Rose Herbs is certified organic.
After a taste test, the Wakame has a very fresh and salty flavor that is perfect to sprinkle over dishes in place of salt. I tried it in a miso soup, sprinkled over salad, and even as a seasoning on top of baked chicken. It does puff up quite a bit so less is more when using Wakame. I didn’t want to consume too much iodine, so I used it sparingly once or twice a week.
Because a little goes a long way, I keep mine in the freezer for freshness. Mountain Rose Herbs uses resealable bags that fit perfectly in the door of my freezer without taking up too much room.
